Geolocation does not switch to the correct language

If Geolocation keeps your store’s default language or does not select the expected language, check your published languages, Geolocation options, and language locale.

1. Publish the target language

  1. Open the Transtore app and go to Language.
  2. Find the language you want visitors to use.
  3. Make sure its Status toggle is turned on.

If the language has not been added yet, follow Add and manage languages in Transtore.

2. Check your Geolocation option

Go to Geolocation and make sure it is enabled.

Under Geolocation options, check how you want the language to change:

  • Automatic switching - Changes the language automatically based on the visitor’s location.
  • Show recommendations - Displays a modal where visitors can review and confirm their preferences.

If you want the language to change without the visitor confirming a selection, choose Automatic switching and save your changes.

For instructions, see Set up Geolocation and configure its options.

3. Check that the language locale matches

A locale is the code used to identify a language or language version. Languages with similar names can have different codes.

For example, Norwegian has these options:

LanguageLocale
Norwegianno
Norwegian (Bokmål)nb
Norwegian Nynorsknn

Transtore’s Geolocation currently uses Norwegian (no) for visitors from Norway.

If your store has Norwegian (Bokmål) (nb) instead, the locale does not match. Transtore may keep your store’s default language rather than switch to Norwegian.

For this case, add and publish Norwegian (no) in Transtore, then test again.

note

Changing the language name displayed in the Switcher does not change its locale. If you want the Switcher to display “Norwegian Bokmål,” our support team can help adjust the displayed name.

4. Open your store in a Guest Profile or incognito window

Transtore remembers a visitor’s preferences in their browser for 30 days. A previously saved language selection may affect your test.

  1. Open a Guest Profile or a new incognito window.
  2. Visit your storefront.
  3. Check whether Geolocation selects the expected language.

If switching works in the new session, a saved browser preference may explain why you saw a different language in your regular browser.
