How does currency conversion work with Shopify Markets?

Shopify Markets determines the product prices and Currency for the market a customer is browsing. Transtore works with those prices to display additional currencies on your storefront.

How Shopify Markets affects your prices

The price Shopify provides can depend on the following settings:

  • Currency - Each market can have its own Currency. For multi-country markets, Shopify's Local currencies option can display different currencies based on the customer's country.
  • Catalogs - Catalogs control which products are available in a market and their prices. You can apply a percentage increase or decrease, or set a fixed price for an individual product. A fixed product price overrides the Catalog's overall percentage adjustment.
  • Exchange rates and rounding - When Shopify converts prices into a market's Currency, its automatic or manual exchange rate and rounding settings affect the final price.

To review these settings, go to Shopify admin > Markets and open the relevant market. Check its Currency settings and assigned Catalogs. To edit Catalog prices, go to Markets > Catalogs.

Catalog Currency and customer-facing Currency

The Currency used to set prices in a Catalog can differ from the Currency displayed to customers. Shopify uses the active Market's Currency settings to determine the customer-facing Currency.

For more information, see Shopify's guides to setting up currencies for markets and creating catalogs for markets.

How Transtore converts storefront prices

Transtore uses the price provided by Shopify for the customer's active Market as the starting price.

When Shopify already displays that price in the selected Currency, Transtore keeps the Shopify price. When the customer selects an additional Currency, Transtore converts the Market price using its configured exchange rate and rounding rule.

This conversion applies to storefront pages, from the Home page through the Cart page, including product and collection pages.

Example: US and Europe markets

In this example, each Market is configured with a default Currency. Transtore converts the price when the customer selects another Currency:

Customer's active MarketDefault Currency in ShopifyCurrency selected in the SwitcherHow the price is displayed
US marketUSDUSDShopify displays the US market's USD price.
US marketUSDEURTranstore converts the US market's USD price into EUR.
Europe marketEUREURShopify displays the Europe market's EUR price.
Europe marketEURUSDTranstore converts the Europe market's EUR price into USD.

If the Europe market has a different product price configured in its Catalog, Transtore uses that Europe market price as the starting price when converting it into another Currency.

This means two customers can see different prices even when they select the same Currency, because their active Markets may have different starting prices.

How Transtore handles Shopify Market prices

Transtore does not overwrite your store's default Currency, Shopify Market Currency settings, or Catalog prices. It only converts the prices displayed on your storefront.

Where should I change conversion settings?

  • Prices handled by Shopify - Review the relevant Market's Currency settings and Catalogs in your Shopify admin.
  • Prices converted by Transtore - Go to Currency > Manage currency in Transtore to adjust exchange rates and rounding rules.

See Set up currency rounding rules and exchange rates for instructions.

What happens at checkout?

Shopify controls the prices and Currency on the Checkout page. Transtore's storefront conversion does not override checkout pricing.

See Does Transtore support local currencies at checkout? for more information.
